Web3NZ caught up with Cody Ellingham to find out what he learned from his many podcast interviews this year, and to get a preview of his plans for 2025.
What was the most significant development in 2024 in the Web3 space from your perspective?
“I think the Bolt12 upgrade for the Bitcoin Lightning Network is the most significant technical development this year.
“Lightning is how we scale payments on Bitcoin and Bolt12 enables wallets to use things like reusable payment requests, increased receiver privacy, and increased censorship resistance.”
What was the most important thing you learned this year as a result of interviewing guests for The Transformation of Value podcast?
“I've met and interviewed many key figures in Bitcoin and what strikes me is just how small the group is globally and yet we have been able to achieve so much.
“Bitcoin is monetising into the world's reserve currency in real-time and is the hardest money we have ever known, but you can still personally meet the people working on the nuts and bolts and have a chat which is awesome - a very collaborative environment.”
What's your big objective for 2025?
“I'm planning some big travel next year to explore Bitcoin adoption more globally in less-developed nations.
“In New Zealand we live with a level of financial privilege that means many people do not understand the value proposition of Bitcoin and are quick to shrug off inflation or the role of the state in financial repression because we don't feel it as strongly here.
“I am hoping to share a fresh perspective and show how Bitcoin is really a tool for human rights and prosperity no matter where you are.”
